A horseman’s handshake is when a person extends their arm and allows a horse to smell the back of their hand before making contact, such as petting, grooming, or riding. It’s a way to create a friendly relationship with the horse, which can lead to a more cooperative experience.

The handshake also allows the person to engage in the flexion and release of their hand, extension and stretch of the shoulder, and motor planning to coordinate the precision and pace of their arm position gently at the horse’s muzzle.

Visual motor skills involve the complex integration of perception, motor precision and control, and hand-eye coordination to recognize, plan, and form shapes, figures, and objects. These skills become important for playing with blocks, puzzles, catching and kicking a ball, coloring, and handwriting. #stableplace #occupationaltherapy #reinremedy

A radial or tripod grasp involves the thumb, index finger and middle finger engaged together to pick up and manipulate small objects. Why is it important? A tripod grasp is used to hold feeding utensils, placing a straw, buttoning, zippers, open containers, and holding a crayon or pencil efficiently for visual-motor tasks.

"Sensory integration involves perceiving, modulating, organizing, and interpreting these sensations to optimize occupational performance and participation. Well-regulated and appropriately functioning sensory systems contribute to important outcomes in social-emotional, physical and motor, communication, self-care, cognitive, and adaptive skills development and maintenance," - American Occupational Therapy Association (2015).
Tools to facilitate integration and development of the sensory system include equipment such as swings, foam compression mats, trampolines and/or experiences with sound, touch, and visual input. An occupational, physical, and speech therapist can provide clinical reasoning and skilled treatment using these tools to offer the best outcomes and progress towards an individuals goals. Horses can be used as an effective treatment tool because of their dynamic movement that can not be replicated by any type of equipment.
It often helps to play with the therapist in the sensory gym before higher level intervention tasks and activities to optimize arousal for the most effective performance and participation during skilled treatment.
